This paper illustrates the benefits and challenges of blockchain technology by exploring case studies of its application and implementation in U.S. local governments as well as in other levels of government internationally. Consistent with the experience that emerging technologies may create efficiencies in service delivery, this research shines light on the importance of data organization and supportive policies to improve outcomes. Early applications in local governments suggest that innovative blockchain solutions should be approached with an open mind and a healthy dose of skepticism.
