Mason L. Tanaka, Chief Information Security Officer
Mr. Mason Tanaka has over 34 years of Information Technology (IT) experience, ranging from computer operations to executive management.
He served over 20 years in the United States Air Force, where he worked his entire career in the Communications-Computer field.
During this time, he was instrumental in the Program Management Responsibility Transfer of five Air Force-wide accounting systems
from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Denver, Colorado to the Standard Systems Center in Montgomery, Alabama. He also
led the successful effort to modify those systems to comply with Year 2000 requirements. Upon his retirement from the USAF in 2001,
he spent the next 12+ years working in the IT industry.
He worked for an IT consulting firm for 10 years, serving as their Vice President of Enterprise Solutions and Software Engineering,
and had the added responsibility as the General Manager for his last 3 years with the company. He planned and directed corporate
activities that included; Strategic and Acquisition Planning, Portfolio and Program Management, Budget and Cost Management, Resource
Allocation and Management (Personnel and Equipment), Policy Development, and other initiatives that were in accordance with the
company’s mission and business objectives.
In June of 2013, he turned his attention to the State of Alabama by providing IT consulting services to the Information Services
Division (ISD), Department of Finance. During this time, he began an effort to develop Project Portfolio Management policies,
processes, and guidance for the state. He joined the Office of Information Technology (OIT) in November 2013 as the Director of
IT Strategic Planning and Policy.
While assigned to OIT, Mr. Tanaka led a team of agency IT Directors that developed the state’s IT Strategic Plan that provides
IT strategic guidance and direction for the State of Alabama. He also worked collaboratively with the Executive Budget Office,
Department of Finance to develop IT budget forms and processes to provide insight into IT budgeting of all state agencies.
By gaining insight into the budgeting of IT resources across the state, OIT is better able to identify and reduce redundant IT
expenditures, and maximize the return on IT investments.
From March 2015 to February 2016, Mr. Tanaka served as Acting Director of ISD, the state’s central IT service provider. During his
time with ISD, he reorganized the division under an Information Technology Services Management (ITSM) framework, and began the
adoption and institutionalization of ITIL processes. He also directed the efforts to migrate state email to the cloud, and the
development of a state hybrid cloud that incorporated on-premise infrastructure with a commercial cloud provider.
Mr. Tanaka returned to the Office of Information Technology in February 2016, and currently serves as the Assistant Secretary of
Information Technology. He has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Resource Management (Magna Cum Laude) from Troy University.
He resides in Pike Road with his wife, and has two daughters.
